Resume workshop for new information professionals

Workshop Description

This workshop will equip participants with strategies and skills for writing resumes as part of successful career searches. The workshop will cover hiring practices in different sectors (government, university, municipal, private sector) that are likely to hire information professionals so that participants will know what they can expect during a job search. The workshop will also provide strategies for writing effective resumes, including how to “read” job descriptions, how to tailor resumes to a job, and how to highlight transferable skills.

Target Audience

This workshop is geared towards students and new professionals who are or will soon be searching for their first job as an information professional

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Understand and describe the hiring process for various sectors

2. Understand how to “read” a job description to identify key elements

3. Develop strategies for effective resume writing, including: tailoring resumes to job descriptions, listing quantifiable accomplishments rather than job duties, and identifying transferable skills

Workshop Facilitators

Alexandra Wieland recently started a job as a Processing and Reference Archivist at Simon Fraser University. Prior to this position, she worked as an Information and Privacy Archivist at SFU. She graduated from SLAIS in 2014 and is an alumna of the iSchool Co-op program. Since graduation, she has served on hiring committees for faculty, staff, and excluded positions at the University, and co-ops and contractor positions within government. She mentors new professionals and is available to provide advice on job applications and negotiating during hiring. Anna  Jubilo has coached and mentored hundreds of graduate students on  experiential learning and career. As the School of Information Co-op  Education Manager for UBC’s Arts Co-op Program, Anna  works with graduate students pursuing their Master of Archival Studies  (MAS), Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS), and Dual MASLIS  degrees at UBC to help them explore, clarify, and navigate their career  interests and goals; feel confident in applying and interviewing for  jobs; transition to the workplace; and build and maintain professional  relationships. She is passionate about how to support graduate students  connect with community and industry partners to develop personally and  professionally.
